Cosmologic Balance

Year: (2015 Ongoing)
Medium: Carved & Marked Wood, Public Space, Dimensions: 4in x 4in x 4in

In this work I create multiple small orbs and place them throughout a public space and allow a community to have access and ownership without direction of use. It questions currency, class, and who deserves access to art work. The images are from how the piece was distributed through‐out a Haitian neighborhood during the Biennale in 2015. Although a few of the pieces were recovered, many of them remained distributed to the public. From time to time, people would discuss having collected one, or having seen people with them. Others have been distributed globally and are kept track of through a map displayed online and in exhibition spaces. The project has now expanded to locations in USA, France, United Kingdom, Austria, Oman, Jamacia, & Haiti.

This piece is created by teaching a class where the audience paints a piece I pre-carved. The pieces are then displayed as a "universe" in combination with works I previously created. The process exercises imagination and consideration of collectively creating reality. Sharing the work in a publicly accessible space, temporarily releasing control of ownership, and reclaiming what remains, allows for the work to be redistributed outside of my control.
